Problem I see with all these hybrid options is ; if you need a R180 to handle the power and/or provide the better lsd its worthless with out good axels !!

R160 late model axels are 22mm toothpicks, and further to that the CV`s are little failure prone things !

Its a no brainer if you can get the R180 hubs etc into your car, they are not that expensive and they also provide the far superiour larger wheel bearing(R160 wheel bearing failures were one of the main points to subaru updating the hubs along with the diff in RA/DCCD cars)

It is possible to machine up a hybrid drive hub(R180 spline, R160 bearing) and use the R180 axel(axel bar and superiour CV inner and outter) in the R160 hub....for Gen 3&4 Lib guys its one of the only solutions for power handling.

If you don`t have power and want to make life simple just use a R160 3.9 or 3.545 with your 6spd and forget the R180.

But apparently there are differences in the splines which make them incompatible.

Inner or outer? Cause from what I have been reading you swap the outer with the original r160's off the (your) car..

FOund a bit more on R180 conversion.
