Hey all :-D

I have just bought one of these Pioneer HUs nice and cheap http://www.pioneer.com.au/en/Products/Car%...%20P5250BT.aspx , I wanted to go with the single DIN option to not attract attention and so have the left over DIN for storage ect.

I listen to Classical music and R&B most days and wanted some advice on what to get to complete the package, I like my sound clearer than louder with a little punch where required.
I have a Blackberry 9000 which stores all my music so I use that to play in the car and may be upgrading to the IPhone 4 when it comes out here and all the current issues with that phone have been fixed.
All stereo gear in the car at the moment is stock, what setup do you guys recommend, like I said I am not after anything blistering loud.

1: what is your budget?

2: are you looking for a shop install or diy?

Yeah budget will help us suggest things to do.
Also, I recently found that the clarity of an ipod touch or iphone is not very good.

I've got a pioneer hu touch screen dd and all that and always listened to the ipod touch...
recently made an mp3 cd and the quality was waaaayyyy better !! no shit man....
Seems that the circuitry inside the pioneer hu is better at decoding mp3s and getting the most out of it..

Run a decent set of 6" splits off your head unit in the front doors and a 12" sub in the boot off a 300w amp.
If you want to fill the car with sound add a set of 6" on the back parcel shelf off a 100w per channel amp.

That keeps it pretty simple and sounds great. It's not in the leauge of the major stereo freaks but will have plenty of punch and bottom end clarity.
JL audio splits $400, pioneer 300w amp $320, pioneer 12"sub $150, 100w rms /channel amp $400, six inch speakers $250 - $400 depending on your taste.

That's my combo and like I say, it's not in the major league, but compared to what 90% of daily drivers, well it's always admired by new passengers and you can comfortably talk over the top of it with a decent bit of power running through it.

Somtimes people think they need to spend a fortune to get a nice sound. I think you do if you want to blow everyones eardrums in the car park and run constant full volume....doof doof doof.

Budjet doesn't really mstter, I'm not after the best quality just something and will be happy with for a few years, I will probably do it myself, in fact I've done the HU already to all the stock stuff without any issues.

I'm not too sure on a budget realyy, how much can I expect to pay for mid range quality?
I plugged my Blackberry staright into the 3.5 mm jack at the front and was amazed at how much better the sound was compared to the old HU, have not tried a cd yet.

Sounds like a good set up, would you still get nice base without the sub or do you thinks its a must, can other speakers be upgraded to get enough bass to warrant not getting a sub?

Well, I've been thinking about it today and you really need the rears running off a half decent amp to fill the car. My front splits running off 40w/rms head unit aren't much without the backup from the rears and the sub.
You will still get a great sound with the front splits off the head unit and the rears on an amp even without a sub.
You don't need to run huge power sub and amp combos or spend mega bucks to get the benifit from the sub. It's really subtle. You sort of cant really hear it. It's just there.

I would then recomend a set of 6.5 inch focal splits up front, and smaller coaxials of the same brand on rear parcel but fitment is a PITA.
12 inch sub on a corner fibreglass box
run all the speakers off a 5 channel amp or 1 for sub and a 4 channel
Dynamat the front doors for better midbass which helps bring the bass forward to for a good front stage.

If you want to set up coaxials on the back parcel shelf the easy way is to make a surround out of MDF board, fit the peakers into it, then screw up to the surrounds from in the boot. Paint the MDF black.
